BUYING A HAND MADE EXTRAORDINAIRE SUIT

Even if you’re not a Travel Extraordinaire it’s worth getting a good suit (or dress for the ladies) and Hoi An is the place to buy one. This small town is up there with Hong Kong and Bangkok for its tailoring, so take advantage while you’re here and splash the cash.

Where: Hoi An, Vietnam

Cost: From 2,250,000 Dong (AUD$ 200 / Euro 100 / GBP 95)

Passion’s Passage

Hoi An is only an hour from the nearest airport in Danang. Most travelers come via bus or train from Hue in the north or Nha Trang in the south.  There are plenty of hotels to choose from, but Marc Passion normally stays in the reasonably priced Huy Hoang Hotel, 73 D Phan Boi Chau.

Where to buy a suit
Hoi An is famous for its tailoring so there are plenty of places to choose from. You won’t go wrong with Yaly on D Tran Phu where you’ll be looked after and given a couple of fittings before your suit is ready within 48 hours. They also do casual clothes and shoes for both men and women. And, if you don’t want to carry your purchases, Yaly can arrange for postage back home.

Was it worth it?
A handmade suit would be five-times more expensive back home, so you’ll be making a wise purchase even if you don’t normally wear a suit. Handmade shoes will set you back another 300,000 Dong.

Other activities near Hoi An
The old town of Hoi An is good for sunset strolls, there’s also a fish market busiest at around 3am. Hire a pushbike to Cua Dai beach and spot communist propaganda art dotted around town.
